The African Textiles Tour starts in the main lobby of the Nairobi Serena Hotel with an extensive display on pillars and walls of stunning cloths woven of palm fibre by men and women in the Congo (DRC). Corridors in each of the six floors of the hotel have textiles from major cultures of Africa, including the beaded leather skirts of the Maasai women of Kenya (with photo of Maasai bride by Carol Beckwith). Other floors include royal textiles from the Ashanti of Ghana and the raw silk of the Merino in Madagascar, “mudcloth” from Mali, sumptuous woven textiles in strips by men or Nigeria or on wide looms by Nigerian women.
